challenge.

- Potential users pointed that they prefer to buy tickets offline because it takes too many links to plan (social media + movie blogs messengers + online purchases, etc)

solution.

- Popcouch bridges the gap between finding an interesting movie (based on personal taste) + gathering info about it + sharing with friends + buying tickets and reviewing movies

researching our movie audience.

user research

We were responsible for approaching movie-goers at popular movie theaters where a brief survey would take place

Research Goals:

- Discover user profile
(age, behavior, spending habits, event influences, attendance frequency…)

- Gather data on movies on & offline experiences (needs, pain points, etc)

- Research if (and why) they prefer to plan their movie theater

learn, book, review and share your movie night experience.

analysis.

As the research started to take some shape, common patterns started to show up.
By analyzing the common GOALS + PAIN POINTS + STATEMENTS + SCENARIOS, I could pinpoint the actions the users aimed to accomplish
when using Popcouch

empathy map

To better organize such patterns and further help with creating a user persona, I chose to use the empathy mapping technique:

user persona

user scenario

scenario-01.png

A. Discovery

Kyan reads about a movie on social media and wants to get more info about it

scenario.03.png

C. Share

Kyan shares the movie profile with a friend so that he decides whether to join Kyan or not

scenario-02.png

B. Search

Kyan visits the Popcouch app to get more info about the movie

scenario-04.png

D. Decision

Kyan purchases a movie ticket, books his seats and receives a confirmation via the app

user flow

This user flow was the basis for content requirements on the app screens.
Having a better understanding of the user needs helped me build a user flow and visualize what was necessary to meet their needs.

The questions considered were:

A. What is the user trying to accomplish?

B. What is important to the user and what will give them confidence to continue?

C. What are the user’s hesitations or barriers to accomplishing the task?

final considerations.

The name for the app was strongly influenced by the results of the UX research, when it became clear that our user’s goal is to have a smooth (“stay ay home”) experience while planning their movie night experience. No more links sharing, driving to buy tickets, endless scrolling reading reviews about an specific movie and so on. However, to some users, the offline booking of a ticket is still a safer experience. The research allowed me to see that some steps of the experience could easily be labeled as habits and sometimes changing a habit is difficult.

By delivering an app that contains all steps of a movies experience, we would save time and other hassles our users would face, but we should still be open to see how well the facility would be received by a percentage of our users through an upcoming A/B test, for example.
